Introduction to DNS and the Internet
In our fundamentals course, we are exploring the Domain Name System (DNS). Specifically, we will be exploring the critical role domain names play in the functioning of the internet.
DNS allows easier access to resources by using human readable names, for example www.example.com, serving as an alias for the resource IP addresses (ex: 93.184.216.34).
Throughout this course, we will explore the inner workings of DNS, its uses, and its future role in how we use the Internet.
In this first lesson, we will explore how computers communicate with each other using IP addresses and how DNS helps devices communicate between one another.
By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid understanding of the role DNS plays in making the Internet accessible to billions of users worldwide. You will appreciate the critical relationship between domain names and IP addresses and grasp the significance of efficient DNS management in ensuring efficient navigation and communication on the Internet.
Key Lesson Concepts:
- Domain Name System (DNS) translates domain names into IP addresses
- DNS helps in efficient navigation and communication on the Internet
- Computers on the Internet communicate using unique IP addresses
- Domain names provide human-friendly easy to remember IP addresses translation
- DNS acts as a universal address book, converting domain names into IP addresses
